Check Engine Light On? What a Car Scan Tells You

The check engine light is one of the most ignored symbols on a dashboard. Some drivers panic when it appears. Others put a piece of tape over it. Neither reaction helps. The light is your car's computer telling you it has noticed something outside normal range, and a scan can tell you what.

What the light means

The engine control unit, or ECU, monitors sensors for air flow, engine temperature, oxygen in the exhaust, throttle position and more. When a reading falls outside what it expects for long enough, the ECU stores a fault code and turns on the light.

The light does not tell you how serious the fault is. It could be a loose fuel cap. It could be a failing sensor. It could be a misfire that is damaging the catalytic converter. This is why the colour and behaviour of the light matter.

Steady light and flashing light

A steady light means a fault has been detected. If the car drives normally, you can usually reach a workshop, but do not leave it for months.

A flashing light usually means a misfire that is serious enough to damage the exhaust system. If the car shakes, hesitates or loses power at the same time, stop driving soon and call for advice. Driving on with a misfire can turn a small repair into a large one.

Common causes

The same few faults account for many check engine lights:

  • A loose or worn fuel cap, which upsets the fuel vapour system
  • A tired oxygen sensor, which affects fuel mixture and mileage
  • Worn spark plugs or a weak ignition coil, which cause a misfire
  • A dirty or failing air flow sensor
  • A vacuum or air leak in the intake
  • A problem in the catalytic converter or the exhaust

What a scan does

A scan tool plugs into the diagnostic port, normally under the dashboard on the driver's side. It reads the stored codes and shows live data from the sensors while the engine runs. A trained technician uses the codes as a starting point and looks at the live readings for anything unusual.

This matters because a code names a circuit or a system, not always a part. A code for an oxygen sensor can be caused by the sensor, by its wiring, or by an air leak that changes the fuel mixture. Replacing the sensor without testing may not fix anything. On our ECU and car diagnostics service, we test behind the code before we recommend a part.

Why clearing the code is not a fix

Some people clear the code and hope for the best. The light goes out, and it comes back a few days later because the cause is still there. Worse, clearing the code erases information the technician needs. The right order is scan, test, repair, then clear the code and recheck.

What to tell the workshop

Details help a great deal. Before you visit, write down:

  • When the light came on, and whether anything happened just before it, such as a fuel fill-up, a wash or heavy rain
  • Whether the car runs differently: rough idle, poor pickup, harder starting, higher fuel use
  • Whether the problem happens cold, hot, at idle or under load
  • Whether anything else was repaired or fitted recently

Cars without a scan port

Cars with an electronic ECU and a diagnostic port can be scanned. Very old carburettor cars have no ECU, and we check those by other methods. If you are not sure whether your car can be scanned, tell us the make, model and year when you call.

What to do next

If the light is steady and the car runs normally, book a scan within the next few days. If it flashes, or the car shakes or loses power, reduce your speed, avoid heavy loads and get to a workshop soon.
